Michal Neugarten skrze své zaměření na médium malby zkoumá vztah mezi klasickou a abstraktní formou. Propojuje přitom techniky, které zdánlivě nemají společnou rovinu, použité materiály a výtvarné polohy v jeho obrazech jsou tedy reprezentativní a zastupují jiné, než původní místo v prostoru a příslušnosti k tématu.
V abstrahování od materiální reality nám zbývá cosi jako obrazový fantom, čistě tonální prostorový tvar, jenž může být vším a zároveň ničím, představuje tak ztělesnění paradoxu obrazu, jenž se stává skutečností až před zrakem diváka. I čistě vizuální obrazový fantom zcela nevztažný k materiální realitě se tak stává prvkem vytvářejícím realitu obrazu.
Jiné fantomy jsou naopak s realitou propojeny, ať již pomocí evokativních tvarů, nebo textur, vztahujícím se k haptickému smyslu.
Tak jako v díle Japonská zahrada, kde hory uzavírající horizont jsou tíživé svou masivní nelítostností. K jejich překročení by bylo zapotřebí křídel ideje, jenž je schopna transcendovat materiální zakotvenost bytí v hmotě. Mohutné vlnobití rozzlobeného oceánu evokuje ohromující sílu, spolu s nekonečným množstvím zatím nevyplněných potencialit.
Výsledkem je dílo až ohromující komplexity, vyvolávající pocit přehlcenosti věcmi, událostmi i okolnostmi. Je reflexí lidské zahlcenosti nejen materiálními předměty, ale i zbytečnými informacemi, které se stávají balastem, jehož nános se den ode dne zvyšuje. Hromady matérie jsou zde zastoupeny pomocí širokého spektra tvarů, barev i textury, jejichž množství je až zahlcující. Přesto to není hmota, která vítězí, ale její absence. Prázdná evokativní místa, která se stávají ohnisky. Jsou to koryta proudící energie, nesmírná bohatost textur a barev odrážející nekonečnou pestrost a bohatost života. Jsou to průhledy, skrze které nám dílo dává nahlédnout pod povrch věcí, dovoluje nám spatřit pod nánosem prachu a úlomků materiálů zapomenutý obraz. Jako nesmělý, poblikávající paprsek světla, vyzařuje z temné, tíživé matérie každodenní skutečnosti idea krásy.
Vytrženy z reality každodennosti, která je zavrhuje jako již nepotřebné a tudíž zbytečné, jako zbytky čehosi, co bylo kdysi potřebné a důležité, zbytky, jejichž krása byla sedřena a oprýskána, stávají se v rukou umělce opět cennými, stávají se tím nejcennějším, drahocennými kousky mozaiky, z nichž vyvstává nová realita obrazu. Díky vytržení ze souvislostí skutečnosti, vyvstává každý jednotlivý dílek mozaiky v naprosté, neopakovatelné jedinečnosti svého bytí. Tuto jedinečnost si zachovává i přes to, že svým precizním umístěním vytváří celek dokonalé harmonie tvarů a barev evokující mozaiky z polodrahokamů.

Michal Neugarten, through his focus on the medium of painting, explores the relationship between classic and abstract form. He connects techniques that seemingly have no common ground, the materials used and artistic positions in his paintings are thus representative and represent something other than their original place in space and relevance to the subject.
In abstracting from material reality, we are left with something like an image phantom, a purely tonal spatial shape, which can be everything and nothing at the same time, thus embodying the paradox of the image, which becomes reality only in the eyes of the viewer. Even a purely visual image phantom, completely unrelated to material reality, thus becomes an element creating the reality of the image. Other phantoms, on the other hand, are connected to reality, whether through evocative shapes or textures, relating to the sense of touch.
As in the work 'Japanese Garden,' where the mountains closing the horizon are oppressive with their massive mercilessness. To overcome them would require the wings of an idea capable of transcending the material anchorage of being in matter. The powerful surging of the enraged ocean evokes an astonishing force, along with an infinite number of yet unfulfilled potentials.
The result is a work of astounding complexity, evoking a feeling of being overwhelmed by things, events, and circumstances. It is a reflection of human overload not only with material objects but also with unnecessary information that becomes a burden, its accumulation increasing day by day. Piles of matter are represented here through a wide spectrum of shapes, colors, and textures, the quantity of which is overwhelming. Yet it is not matter that triumphs, but its absence. Empty evocative places that become focal points. They are troughs of flowing energy, immense richness of textures and colors reflecting the infinite diversity and richness of life. They are vistas through which the work allows us to look beneath the surface of things, allowing us to see beneath the layer of dust and fragments of materials the forgotten image. Like a timid, flickering beam of light, the idea of beauty radiates from the dark, oppressive matter of everyday reality.
Torn from the reality of everyday life, which rejects them as no longer needed and therefore unnecessary, as remnants of something that was once needed and important, remnants whose beauty has been worn away and chipped, they become valuable again in the hands of the artist, they become the most valuable, precious pieces of a mosaic from which a new reality of the image emerges. By being torn from the contexts of reality, each individual piece of the mosaic emerges in the absolute, unrepeatable uniqueness of its being. This uniqueness is maintained even though its precise placement creates a whole of perfect harmony of shapes and colors evoking mosaics made of semi-precious stones.

The painting of Michal Neugarten is distinctive and consistent. The artist creatively develops a concept known from his past exhibitions; experiments with the brush, which he wants to replace with another tool, collage, layers, and painterly palimpsests. Michal Neugarten. creates with great freedom, as we know from abstract expressionism, but his painting goes further, the artist combines technically complexly applied and layered color spots with paper collage and painterly cutout. Expression, the impression of more or less controlled chaos, the use of chance, a very Baroque multicentrism of composition, all this creates new images by M.N. full of tension and contrasts. The painting is fresh, contemporary, new, full of New York expansion. The naming of individual paintings gives the viewer the possibility of further, endless interpretations, which can lead to surrealistic and poetic interpretations.

Malba Michala Neugartena je charakteristická a konsekventní. Umělec tvořivě vyvíjí koncepci, kterou známe z jeho minulých výstav; experimenty se štětcem, který chce nahradit jiným nástrojem, koláž, vrstvy a malířské palimpsesty. Michal Neugarten tvoří s velkou svobodou, jakou známe z abstraktního expresionismu, ale jeho malba jde dál, umělec spojuje technicky složitě nanesené a navrstvené barevné skvrny s papírovou koláží a malířským výřezem. Exprese, dojem míň či víc kontrolovaného chaosu, použití náhody, velice barokní multicentrismus kompozice, to vše vytváří nové obrazy M.N. plné napětí a kontrastů. Malba je čerstvá, dnešní, nová, plná newyorské expanze. Pojmenování jednotlivých obrazů dává divákovi možnost dalších, nekonečných interpretací, které mohou vést až k surrealistickým a poetickým interpretacím.
