V obrazech Michala Neugartena je zřejmá kontinuita, podobně jako je tomu u hudby. Snaha přiblížit se ideálu jednoty a unismu. Přestože umělec ví, že není možné dosáhnout jednolitého obrazu, bez kontrastů či dominanty – protože by se jednalo o utopii – skvěle se mu daří tuto hranici v obrazech překonávat, a to díky minimalizaci nadbytečných prvků, díky kontinuaci samotného jádra, podstaty obrazu.

Napomáhají tomu také jen nepatrné změny mezi jednotlivými obrazy, které „neskřípou”, nevyvolávají zbytečné dění. V obrazech Neugartena čas nezastavil, a každý další, nový prvek zabírá své výjimečné, nenáhodné a autentické místo, vnáší prostor a pohyb.

Obrazy Michala jsou tématem samy pro sebe, jsou samy o sobě realitou, aniž by musely nějakou realitu napodobovat. Jsou emocionální, sensuální materií a hloubkou, nikoliv pouze povrchem, plochým zrcadlem obrazu. Jinak řečeno, tématem obrazu je jeho realita sama o sobě ( Platón ) a prostředkem je dřevo, barva a další hmoty, což obrazy přibližuje reliéfům a assemblage, dává jim hloubku a masitou materii. Obrazy jsou afterimages reality, podstatný je pro ně neustálý pohyb.

Obrazy nemají meze, nemají konec, jsou otevřené. Michalovy obrazy jsou sítem, na kterém zbyly ty nejdůležitější pocity a vjemy, blikající mžitky, “afterimages” reality.

Michal Neugarten je malíř, který redukuje malbu na proces materiálové manipulace, která má téměř performativní charakter. Samotný rozměr aktivity – performance – proces vzniku malby – není součástí jej prezentace – vidíme obrazy, které jsou stále relativně statické.

Přesto jejich charakter, který postupně přerůstá do prostorových řešení – ale stále uvnitř formátu obrazu – je výslednicí záznamu cílené a intuitivní materiálové manipulace.

Dochází tak ke vjemu, který má výrazně materiální a prostorový charakter, a to i přes tento ohraničený formát – formát obrazu. Naše vnímání samotných obrazů je tak prodlouženo mimo tato formální omezení – jsme nuceni si procesy vzniku malby generovat v hlavě. Tato intuitivní, asociační či dokumentární tíha jednotlivých obrazů se stává jejich podstatou. Osobně mám více vyvinuté prostorové vidění než samotné vnímání barev – pigmentů.

Postupy malby Michala Neugartena mi tak umožňují vnímat malbu v kontextu vizuální tvorby i mimo hranice samotného obrazového vjemu. Obrazy vznikají v autentickém prostoru ateliéru ve vesnici Čimelice, daleko mimo hranice našeho města, kde sociální, kulturní či politické stimuly nevstupují nekontrolovatelně do autorovy tvorby. Obrazy jsou tak systematickou a experimentální prací v terénu vizuální komunikace, která má silně univerzální – tedy přeneseně i globální – charakter. Jednotlivosti zde hrají kolektivní hru – ta se zde jeví jako syntetický proces.

Michal Neugarten is a painter who reduces painting to a process of material manipulation that is almost performative. The very dimension of the activity – performance – the process of painting – is not a part of its presentation – we observe images that are still relatively static.

Yet their character, which gradually grows into spatial solutions – but still within the format of a painting – is the record of purposeful and intuitive material manipulation.

As a result, what is being perceived is of a distinctive material and spatial character, despite its limited format of a painting. Our perception of the images themselves is thus extended beyond these formal limitations – we are forced to generate the processes of painting in our heads. This intuitive, associative or documentary weight of individual images becomes their essence. Personally, my spatial vision is much more developed than the actual perception of colors – pigments.

The techniques of Michal Neugarten’s painting thus enable me to perceive painting in the context of visual creation and beyond the perception of the image itself. The paintings are created in the authentic space of the studio in the village of Čimelice, far beyond the boundaries of our city, where social, cultural or political incentives do not enter uncontrollably into the artist’s work. The paintings are thus a systematic and experimental work in the field of visual communication, which has a highly universal – hence the transferrable and global – character. Single items play a collective game here, which appears as a synthetic process.

Michal Neugarten’s paintings show continuity – as is the case with music – attempting to approach the ideal of unity and unism. Although the artist knows that it is not possible to achieve a homogenous image, without contrasts or dominance – because it would be a utopia – in his images he has managed to overcome these constraints by minimizing unnecessary elements, by continuing the core, the essence of the image.

This is further helped by only slight changes between individual images, which do not „squeak“, do not cause unnecessary events. In Neugarten’s paintings, time has not stopped, and each and every new element occupies its exceptional, non-random and authentic place, bringing space and movement.

Michal’s paintings are a world of its own, they create their own reality instead of imitating any existing one. They are emotional, sensual matter and depth, not merely a surface or plain reflection of an image. In other words – they depict their own reality (Plato), by means of wood, paint and other materials, which brings them close to reliefs and assemblage, gives them depth and fleshy character. His works are afterimages of reality, with constant movement being their essence.

The paintings have no boundaries, no end at any point, they are open. Michal’s paintings are a sieve that holds only the most important feelings and perceptions, flashing aids, afterimages of reality.
